Proverbs (စကားပုံမ်ား) (Part - 1)

The following are extracted from the-Sayings-and-Proverbs Section of the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary 7th edition. They give advice or say something that is generally true. Sometimes a speaker will leave out part of the sentence because it is so well known. That part that is often missed out is shown in brackets.

I put them under the proverb section on my blog even though in the Oxford Dictionary they are included in the-Sayings-and-Proverbs Section.

1. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.
To say that when you are away from sb that you love, you love them even more
-Make+Obj+V1=......

2. There’s no accounting for taste.
Used to say how difficult it is to understand why sb likes sb/sth that you do not like at all

3. Actions speak louder than words.
What a person actually does means more than what they say they will do.

4. It’ll be all right on the night.
Used to say that a performance, an event, etc. will be successful even if the preparations for it have not gone well
-All right=OK
-At night နဲ႔ by night က ပို၍ အသုံးက်ယ္ျပန္႔ေပမဲ႔ on the night ကိုလည္း တစ္ခါတရံ သုံးၾကသည္။ Eg. On the night of May

5. The apple doesn’t fall/never falls far from the tree.
A child usually behaves in a similar way to his or her parent(s).
-Far from (adv)=A long distance away=

6. If you cannot beat them, join them. If you cannot defeat sb or be as successful as they are, then it is more sensible to join them in what they are doing and perhaps get some advantage for yourself by doing so.

7. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. People all have different ideas about what is beautiful.

8. Beauty is only skin-deep. How a person looks is less important than their character.

9. You’ve made your bed and you must lie in / on it. You must accept the results of your actions.

10. Beggars can’t be choosers. People say beggars can’t be choosers when there is no choice and sb must be satisfied with what is available.
