It is said that parents are the teachers at home and teachers are the parents in school. In fact, the role of teachers is as important to a student as that of parents. For a bright and prosperous future, a student really needs a good and qualified teacher. Here it is absolutely sure that there are numerous qualities of such a teacher. However, in my opinion, the most crucial ability for a teacher is being able to understand each individual student’s natural ability and his greatest need.
First, why does a teacher need to understand each individual student’s natural ability? Each and every student has an inherently different IQ; some have a low IQ, most have an average one, while a few have a distinctly high one. And each and every student has an intrinsically different characteristic nature, too; someone may be very brainy and resourceful in one or two areas, but he may not in others. Due to such differences, a teacher certainly needs to tactfully adopt different approaches in teaching his lessons to his students. A teacher without an understanding the differences would surely burden his students with his lessons instead of being able to educate them more effectively. Therefore, a teacher really needs to understand each individual student’s natural ability.
Second, why does a teacher need to understand each student’s need? The level of the students being taught by a teacher may not be always the same; that may be elementary, middle or high or basic, intermediate or advanced. As a matter of fact, a good and qualified teacher is not the one who teaches what he knows, but the one who teaches what his students really need. For instance, a professor giving his lecture to the students at the level of an elementary or middle class might not need to elaborate so much. His unnecessary elaboration might make the students more confused instead of being clear in their minds. Therefore, it is of great importance to a teacher to understand what each student really needs.
Here, in order to understand what the students really need, he constantly has to encourage his students to raise questions and also the questions raised by them should be carefully listened to and answered with patience and respect. And a teacher needs to be always open to the responses and suggestions of the students and also at the same time, the relationship between should be built on openness and friendliness. In truth, the questions, responses and suggestions of the students are the really and truly invaluable resources to the way to a successful teaching-profession of a teacher.
In conclusion, no one would deny that the qualities of a good and qualified teacher are too numerous to mention. Nonetheless, I strongly hold that the above-mentioned ability alone is the most essential quality of a teacher, for he cannot expect to succeed his teaching-profession without an understanding of the nature and needs of the students.
